Are Your Sun, Moon, or Rising Afflicted?

An affliction in your natal chart is when your Sun, Moon, Rising (Ascendant), or any other planet has only hard or difficult aspects.

These positions represent your greatest challenges and your more promising areas of growth.

They are issues to be dealt with so you won't run into problems, personally and emotionally.

Examples of an Afflicted Ascendant:

Depending on the planets involved, an afflicted ascendant will affect you in various ways.

If Mercury is involved, you should avoid sarcasm and a tendency to sacrifice truth for some technical advantage of the moment. Learn to communicate information at a pure and simple level rather than saying things for the effect.

With Venus, you may make others feel uncomfortable at times or suffer rejection because your petty vanities are hard for others to take. Your natural flirtatiousness may bring you some things in life you would rather not have. Strive to see beyond the immediate sensations and experiences of the moment.

If Mars is creating challenging aspects, others may fear you or flatly just dislike you. You may be misunderstood because your personality is highly explosive. Avoid anger as the first response to uncomfortable situations. When your energy is properly channeled you can be very creative and dynamic.

Examples of an Afflicted Sun:

If you have an afflicted Sun in the 1st House, you need to guard against being too heavy-handed. You may suffer from conveying to others a lack of sensitivity to issues in their life. You need to be cautious to not give others the picture that you are the only one who matters to you.

With an afflicted Sun in the 2nd House, you may be prone to making poor financial decisions. You may not always listen to good advice. Learn to be more attentive to others and less concerned with issues of power and control. An overly possessive attitude can mean that the good in life can't get to you. Try to be more open without being demanding or presumptuous and you will establish the consistent pattern of personal security that you long for.

Having an afflicted Sun in the 4th House, you may make yourself unhappy by trying too hard to establish a consistent pattern of security in life. Avoid letting your focus narrow to the point where you only care about your own family and home situation.

Examples of an Afflicted Moon:

If you have an afflicted Moon in the 3rd House, you need to watch that you don't jump to conclusions. You make the mistake of incorrectly generalizing from your past experiences which can give you a tendency to think along extremely prejudiced lines.

With an afflicted Moon in the 4th House, your desire for emotional security may drive you toward poor decisions in your personal life where you actually create the situations that you fear most. Home and family seem unstable which makes you cling all the more, this in turn makes them more unstable.

Having an afflicted Moon in the 9th House, you suffer because world experience doesn't match your expectations or beliefs. Try to let what happens to you mold your beliefs rather than have your philosophy of life limit and color what you will experience. You are prone to be quite prejudiced in your thinking.

If you have an afflicted Moon in the 11th House, you often overvalue or undervalue your talents. You may also have friends that are unreliable or dishonest. By being very clear on your own motives for developing social contacts you will be more inclined to avoid being deceived.

Understanding our afflictions brings awareness and a greater understanding of ourselves so that we can heal and let go of our blocks, childhood traumas, and self-imposed limitations.
